AUDIO FILES   "The Original"- Flathead One

I remember writing these early songs in a kind of a fog. Words would just kind of come out of nowhere, as they still do, but I was even less sure about what I was writing. These songs were writen during my early ramblining periodand were influenced by playing with a friend who was into country blues.

There are a lot of songs that didn't make it on the first one. and pieces of songs I am still working on. The really early songs really sucked and I have lost a lot of the papers they were writen on. But I guess there are more to be written.

Here are clips in Real Audio format:

The Songs:

When I was Young - Tassjara - Stonehenge - One love - Simple Song - Stagger Lee - Ain`t Got No Bones - Children of Malcontent - Patriotic Son - Faces and the Names

    When I was Young
when i was young i used to believe
love was as strong as cherry tree
    but washington came sneaking
    and he set me free

you can talk about this you can talk about that
but the pot's boiled dry and the bottom's getting black
    ain't no need to wonder
    if i will be back

cause down at the leve the river is rising
and you ain't doing nothing but criticizing
    you better watch that river
before it flows a new way

'cause it's been raining for so many days
but now the sun is shining and i'm on my way
    you've got to be nice
if you want me to stay

there's sugar and salt seems mighty nice
you'll get both now that's my advice
    you'd better think about it
    cause i'll only try twice

one'll get you two two'll get you four
watch me baby walk out your front door
    i'll see you pretty mama
    on the other shore

one'll get you two three'll get you five
i'll be walkin' right down the line
    see you pretty baby
    on the other side

    Tasajara

you know i dream of grandeur
    sometimes almost every day
but i can't let those dreams
get to much in my way

'cause the road is mighty twisted
    right where i sit
and it's such a joyful time
    to see where i fit

    heading into high ground
with a chain tied to my back
but if i don't think about it
there ain't to much i do lack

    two days from tassahara
not such a mighty long way
    i won't be here tomorrow
but it's nice along the way

    people say "hey look boy
"you better do things our way
    "you ain't gonna get nowhere
"you could be a big boy some day"

but if i just sit here strumming
    and thinking of a tune
i ain't got time for nothing else
    on this sunny afternoon

so i just sit here and watch that river flow
where it's deep it's mighty clear
    but this time of year
    it's moving kind of slow

    Stonehenge

i found a map on some paper
to a place in my mind
    left on my notes
by some friends who were very kind

there´s no one left to visit
    they´ve all gone away
but when I was in trouble
they were all there to say

come over to out house and stay
from out porch watch the sun set away
there will soon be a very brand new day
and we´re sure you wonÕt feel this way

on a hill by the golf course
by the field and the magic forest
with the black berries on the back porch
turn at the rainbow in the driveway

sit and wait for the visits
from the people that no one knew
who just stopped by to say thanks
to someone whoÕd lead them up that way

    chr.

i stopped by for a visit
and amy was just moving out
    the phone bill wasn´t paid
and no one else was left about

except the dragon in the corner
my tears up on the shelf
    the black berries for breakfast
    the mirror and myself

    chr

    One Love

so many women pass this doorway
    they keep walking through
how can i tell if you will love me
how can i tell you will be true

how can i tell if you will love me
    how can i be sure
will you be the one and only
    to make me so secure

    one love
    one love
    o---o
    one love
    one love
cause i´m walking through a lonely lonely world

i don´t want no fancy woman
caught in a spell of her own way
all i want is someone to talk to
for many, many, many, many days

in your eyes i see a fire
    but burning what to fuel
you won´t find this man still pleading
i wait until you say you will

    chr.

i´ve seen so many bridges burning
with line and ties only I have built
cause if my mooring is to be the founding
you must help weave the magic quilt.

    Simple Song

this is just a simple song
i´d like to sing for you
but if you´d like to sing along
i hope you sing it too

cause there is something very special
and I hope you feel its true
    about singing all together
its time for singing something new

cause its time to see the difference
between the laughter and the rain
its time to hold someone´s hand right through
    the sunshine and the pain

and if you aren´t strong enough
to hold on for the refrain
just remember that there´s someone else
    who´ll need your help again

so sing a song for the world as one
and a song for all the wrongs to be undone
cause if you think it´s silly to be singing on a song
wait until you lift your voice and you start to sing along

    ror there are might armies
    who wander through our land
    but there´s a stronger army
    in the heart of everyman

and there´s nowhere you can hide
so you´d better join the band
cause if we´re singing all together
    maybe they won´t come again

cause well be singing on the songs of our live
weÕll be singing all the songs of our lives
and our hearts will be so filled
there won´t be time to hurt or kill
we´ll be just working on our
    harmonies together

    Stagger Lee

could be on a rainy morning
could be on a rainy night
stagger lee and billy d. lyon
    had a great big fight
    he was a bad man
    that stagger lee

    stagger lee said billy
    please don´t take my life
    i´ve got two lovely children
    and a very lovely wife
but he was a bad man
    that stagger lee

    stagger lee said billy
    i can´t go for that
    you won all my money
and my brand new stetson hat
    he was a bad man
    that stagger lee

    stagger lee shot billy
he shot the boy so bad
that the bullet went through billy d. lyon
and broke the bar tender's looking glass
    he was a bad man
    that stagger lee

    call down your undertaker
call down your rubber tired hearse
lay him down beneath the ground
    that will be his curse
    he was a bad man
    that stagger lee

    say mister policeman
    how can it be
    that you arrest everybody
    but that cruel stagger lee
    he was a bad man
    that stagger lee

if your ever down in louisiana
stop down by the lions club
and ever step you'll be walking in
    billy d. lyon´s blood
    he was a bad man
    that stagger lee

could be on a rainy morning
could be on a rainy night
stagger lee and billy d. lyon
    had a great big fight
    he was a bad man
    that stagger lee

    Ain´t Got No Bones

i´ve got a woman ain´t got no bones
i stand her on her feet, but she falls down on the floor
i give her everything i got, she only asks for more

when its gone its gone its gone for good

she talks all day she talks all night
she says she fights for them women's rights
but she plays the game with all of her might

when its gone its gone its gone for good

i got a dog he ain´t got no sense
    goes running through the forest
    right into the fence
i sit to think about it
but i must be pretty dense

cause when its gone its gone its gone for good

i got to hurry i got there too late
all she wants me to do is to hesitate
but now i´m driving she´ll have to wait

when its gone its gone its gone for good

i got an office eight miles high
i sit there thinking but i don´t know why
you may see me in the window

    just trying to fly

cause when its gone its gone its gone for good

    Children of Malcontent

i´ve got a penny in my pocket
    a gun in my hand
you´ve got a ring on your finger
i´ll get it if I can
i´ll sell it for a dollar
    sell it for a dime
    i´m never gonna worry
cause i´ll never do the time
    I´m bigger than jessie james
    or al capone
    get out of my face
    leave me alone

    me an my brother
    walked into the store
we took all of the money
then we walked right out the door
i was screaming at those bastards
    made ´em squirm just right
i got so excited shooting everything
i shot my brother's head that night
    i never talk about it
i only run from the law
i know i got it coming
how could i tell my ma

    what i´ll do tomorrow
    what i did today
    what I did before this
    i really cannot say
    i´m gonna live forever
    everybody´s gonna pay
    things are gonna change soon
they say the sun will shine someday
but I´ve got my music and my best friend
    just tucked inside my belt
when he hit the floor and looked at me
    i wonder how he felt

    Patriotic Son

so you want to be a soldier
cause you like to shoot the gun
and you saw the man on tv
    with the patriotic son

you like to play with pistols
and you want to be the one
    to protect this nations honor
and you want to shoot someone

    i went to the movies
    and the audience did roar
he shoot him with a smile
and the blood dripped to the floor

what is with this world on men
with head stuck in the sand
who are so fond of killing
could just a easily lend a hand

but we don´t live in lebanon
    or in san salvador
we just like to go out shopping
    and rave about the stores

won´t feel the fear at night
from the knocking at the door
you won´t lose that last lust of heat
with the missile through the floor

if you wake up on some dusty road
such a long, long, long way from home
and look out on the bodies
and the blood and broken bones
will you think you had some reason
why you took the time to come
or will it just come down to the fact
you like to shoot the gun

    Faces and the Names

who frees their mind to under stand
who drops their load to lend a hand
who finds their life will be a stand
who takes the time to mend the man

who builds a fire inside their heart
who sees a way and makes a start
who lifts their eyes and takes a part
who sings the songs and find the art

ohh..ohh.. the faces and the names
ohh..ohh.. the faces and the names
ohh..ohh.. the faces and the names
    and who will remember

who feeds the lips of hungry years
who pulls their currage right from their tears
who pits their patience against their fears
who breaks their way through all these mirrors

who tells the boy that he is a man
who fills their heart and thinks that they can
who builds the way and makes a plan
who loses all and gets up again

    chr.

and when so many people have died
will you be here to say that you´ve tried

ohh..ohh.. the faces and the names
ohh..ohh.. our faces and our names
ohh..ohh.. your faces and your names
    and who will remember
