AUDIO FILES   "Atlanta"- Flathead Four

T his came together during the time when i was just starting to settle down. Baby Cry and Listening were written one night while I was still sleeping in a van outside of Boston at the Natick rest area.

After almost ten years of bouncing around, I finally found a place with a living room to record these in. I tried to produce these a little more and started to work with some other musicians. They aren't all the straight forward arrangements that I play solo. I was kind of experimenting,......which i hope to start more of, again.

I think these are some of my strongest songs,...as a group. There were some real soul searhing moments when these popped out...!!

Here are clips in Real Audio format:

The Songs:

Atlanta - Journey to be Free - Down at the Levee - Stranger from the Road - I´ll Remember the Good Times - Listening to the Wind - I Never Wanted to See My Baby Cry - Stagger Lee - Some Days/Tracy - I Know

    Atlanta

mighty ships sail off to carry
all the treasures i have found
unerring in perfection beyond my reason they are bound
even if i had a compass pirates would slip away
hungry for tomorrow with these dry bones
    they´ll never stay

that fine little girl is tearing me apart
she's taken all the pieces of my broken heart
and there's nothing left to do
but lace up my worn out shoes
and go drifting through the lost and lonely
    i will wander

    oh atlanta
draw me closer to your shores
i'm coming back for more i´ll soon surrender
hold my head within your arms
i just can´t believe this world of ours
and the only sweetness i´m allowed is near your harbor
    your safe harbor

take your rubies and your lace
hold your mirror closer to my face
so the thread which i might weave
    shines through delusion

with all the gold and all the jewels
and all the dreams of all the fools
held so tightly within my right hand of justice
you´d come and loosen up my hold
with your wisdom so very old
tearing down my walls for free
    filling my hunger

because you told me once before
in this dreamers world you´ll open every door
and each springtime you may find is soon turned under
but if you´ll show me to the sky
i´d like to give it one more try
´cause with your halo in my eye
    i´ll stand delivered

    Journey to be Free

the only thing that´s not so clear
as the wonder in your eyes
is the strength of the conviction
that would keep you from the lies

    taking back the finest thing
    you might have ever done
would be by far much easier
than to complete what you've begun

    oh....my half born child, impatiently
can't you feel the moments fall like petals on the sea
come gather them in your basket bring the best ones home to me
for there is no greater reason on this journey to be free

    amanda can´t you hear
    the warning of the tide
it will take you back most surely
as your moorings start to slide

and the clouds which blaze so brilliant
with the setting of the sun
    could gather in the twilight
to wash away all that you've done

    -chorus-

    roll away the mountains
    roll away the sea
you have crossed the mighty ocean
so that truth would set you free

but when all that´s left are medals
for the battles you have won
you come to me and say,
    how can i buy belief
in what i´ve worked so hard for to become

    -chorus-

    Down at the Levee

    i´m goin´ down to the i´m goin´ down
    i´m goin´ down to the i´m goin´ down
goin´ to the levee i´m goin´ down to the sea
    goin´ to the ocean
and i´m gonna take my baby with me

don´t want no preachin´ baby don´t want no pain
don´t want no preachin´ baby don´t want no pain
don´t want to worry turn my back to the strain
and i tell you all right now
i might not go back there again

rise up in anger you gonna raise up some scorn
rise up in anger you gonna raise up some scorn
hand from hand limb from limb surely you will be torn
if you raise a little cain
you wish you´d never been born

might be some thunder, baby, might be some rain
might be some thunder, baby, might be some rain
off in the distance but it could be coming back to stay
it´s been a long, long way a winding
to be winding up this way

One More Stranger From the Road

holding places in time that you know
    trading faces so blind
telling me sheltering dreams from below

    could you be so kind
    would you mind
one more stranger from the road

alone as all of my hopes come bursting
i´ll sweep the ashes from the clay
hardened only to stand more securely

    -chorus-

    tender, gentle truth unfolding
don't hold on to your heart
if you call me i will come running

    -chorus-

    I´ll Remember the Good Times

    i´ll remember the good times
when there's no time at all
if there isn't a kind word
    i´ll find one to recall

    because forever´s a long time
    i´d rather not spend
    needing excuses
    for missing my friends

    i´ll brighten a candle
    in the window i´ll place
    hoping to steer home
    these memories erased

    for me who´s been given
these few years of their best
    i needn´t disturb
what's been left to it´s rest

i´ll see the light in an old eye
    grown wild with years
    shining before me
    guiding me near

for while in judgment i´m standing
    of their frustrations and fear
which one of our dark side´s
    stands guiltless of tears

    so tell me of fortunes
    forsaken for love
    of castles defended
    and light from above

    for in one tender moment
    when love is so blind
    forgivness is endless
´till the end of all time

    Listening to the Wind

doesn´t really matter why you stop and listen to the wind
standing on the corner 'cross from where you did begin
listening to the night go rolling off until you cry
reaching out for something strong enough to say good-bye

and i know there's a reason for the haunting of your eyes
for the last thing that you needed hangs decaying from the skies
but if nothing could be broken you'd be frozen there alive
holding on to pieces sharp to cut you down to size

because who holds (sells) the promises unbroken
and who counts the days ´til they grow old
and who´ll fill the countless prayers unspoken
and be listening to this mystery unfold

is there really any difference in the fabrics that you´d worn
until the sword of justice fell and left them all so torn
    unmoving, ever-restlessly, addressing, evermore
you´d get twice as much for half the price down at store twenty-four

and i know that you've carried all the letters for the king
and though you knew the words they would never let you sing
but one virtue is so precious you could wear it for a ring
for if you´d come here any sooner you know it wouldn´t mean a thing

    -chorus-

now i really do believe that there is an answer on your shores
rising up to freedom from where forgiven grieves are stored
waiting there for something holding out for more
you can see the ships are passing ever closer to your door

but i know you'd be wanting to be told the reason why
everything worth standing for keeps laying down to die
but i´ve offered up my innocence and stand on feet of clay
you see I´ve bartered off my eloquence and buried it away

    -chorus-

I Never Wanted to See My Baby Cry

i never wanted to be the one to keep moonbeams in the sky
i never thought i´d have to call on angels to get by
but everything that could keep me here
just makes it hard to say good-bye
and i never wanted to see my baby cry

i never wanted to be the one to take away
the dreams that could come true
i never wanted to see the sky fall down all around you
but if i were to hold you now
you would know that it was a lie
and i never want to see my baby cry

    feeling like the only one
as the world just turns away
    standing there so lonely
like you have always felt that way

i never wanted to be the one to make all of the petals fall
and i thought i could understand enough to understand it all
becoming more or less but i could not tell you why
i just never wanted to see my baby cry

you and i i thought that we
    could always feel this way
i thought we were right beside
but we were just worlds away

i never wanted to be the one
to tell all the little times that they were a lie
i never wanted to take the stardust down from our eyes
but if i were another man i´d never want to say good-bye
´cause i never wanted to see my baby cry

    Stagger Lee

could be on a rainy morning
could be on a rainy night
stagger lee and billy d. lyon
    had a great big fight
    he was a bad man
    that stagger lee

    stagger lee said billy
    please don't take my life
    i´ve got two lovely children
    and a very lovely wife
but he was a bad man
    that stagger lee

    stagger lee said billy
    i can´t go for that
    you won all my money
and my brand new stetson hat
    he was a bad man
    that stagger lee

    stagger lee shot billy
he shot the boy so bad
that the bullet went through billy d. lyon
and broke the bar tender´s looking glass
    he was a bad man
    that stagger lee

    Tracy (some days)

    tracy´s lost the pieces
to the puzzle that she found
    out among the misplaced packages
    when garbage day came round

    some nights she goes collecting
when the busy day is through
doesn´t have to be quite perfect
doesn´t have to be so new

just a little bit of something
for the closet or the den
    might just come to nothing
    you never know, but then

some days she finds a little piece of kindness
some days there´s a whisper and a frown
some days she thinks we all just walk in blindness
but one day she knows an (the) answer will be found

    there was a story written
    woven to a rhyme
    sung in perfect harmonies
    then given to mankind

for the seed grows tall at harvest
it is reaped by those who´ve sown
    made to finest offerings
while the sun and moon look on

    the gifts of all creation
    the joys of daily bread
    but somewhere past her waking
they´ve all but left her head

    - chorus -

    now, tracy holds the handle
on the bag with gabriel´s horn
she found it down off mercer street
with a flannel shirt that's hardly worn

and there´s a place beside her night stand
on the collected works except one book
    of some illustrious statesman
who turned out to be a crook

she´s got the hopes and fears of all the years
    collecting dust until the day
when tracy finds the last piece missing
and turns this world back to it´s way

    but for now-

    I Know

i know where i am going
but i´ve never been there before
    i'm only finding the door
how could i ask any more

looks like holding but i´ve been hiding
    i had no reality
    i took everybody´s for free
thanks now i´ve got only me

my father said that he´d been traveling
so far from where he had been
he wondered how far he could spin
i´d like to see him again

the gladiators they suffer their children
they cause all these wonders to bleed
hold them fill up their need
hope that we all will be freed
