Street Performance Arts
For Santa Monica

  1. Statement of intent

In regard to Street Performance, and relative to Santa Monica and the areas frequently performed in at the Third Street Promenade and the Santa Monica Pier, the Santa Monica Street Performers Group (SMSPG) respectfully requests the attention of the Mayor, City Councilors and various agencies of Santa Monica.

As an informal, but representative body for Street Performers, we are recommending a set of policies for Street Performance which we consider to be important for both quality performance standards and for Street Performance regulations.

These policies are put forth in order that:

  1. The public may have full enjoyment of many worthwhile and creative performances.
  2. Public safety and comfort can be maintained.
  3. Rights and privileges of residents, businesses customers, the general public, performers and visitors alike can be respected and protected.
  4. City policies, ordinances and regulations can be observed.

Street Performers recognize their contribution to social gathering and interaction on the Santa Monica Pier, the Third Street Promenade and the City at large. We applaud the City's concept of the Pier and Promenade. Sociability, lively interaction and an informal, enjoyable atmosphere are at the center of our artistic efforts - just as they are part of a successful community. We like and are concerned about people. Why else do we do what we do? We wholeheartedly want to preserve the health of the community and the health of the Pier and Promenade concept.
