Supporting Performance

In order for a city to have a healthy street and healthy performance environment, it must have a supportive attitude towards these activities.

Too often cities take a restrictive regulatory approach towards Performers. They punish the many for the misdeeds of the few and don't seek to find common sense ways to encourage and regulate with an eye towards promoting the positive cultural benefits of Street Performance.

In a too restrictive environment the performers feel picked on and are less responsive to community needs which only serves to justify further restrictions in a never ending cycle. Good performers are driven off and the down and out individual beating on an instrument for a few coins becomes the poster child for Street Performance.

Often all street level activities are lumped together in the category of being undesirable. This is a difficult prejudice for most people to overcome until they spend a little time on the street and begin to enjoy the diversity.

If performers are encouraged and respected for their extensive contributions to the community through a system of regulation which is enforced with a mediative approach, then, the best possible performers will form a more responsive and responsible group which becomes more self regulating.

It is very important for all those who enjoy Street Performance to be vocal in their support. Personal comments, calls and letters should be sent to city halls, police, stores and news papers to let them know how much you like the Street Performers.
